CRAFT TRAINING – INVESTING IN OUR PEOPLE

Aug 10, 2022 | Employee Development, Featured, Our Culture

Craft training received a huge boost in FieldCore’s Middle East and Africa region through a series of in-person training sessions presented for the first time in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates.

Taher Abujoudeh, Region GM for FieldCore Middle East and Africa, says: “The recent training courses for our Craft colleagues support a key output in the FieldCore Blueprint, namely empowering the people who power the world”.

Building long-term careers

“By investing in the future of our employees, we are investing in the future of our company as we enhance our competitive advantage in the industry,” he adds.

According to Taher, developing employees through training sessions like these is one of the many ways in which FieldCore helps to build long-term careers in the GE-family.

The sessions – aimed at expanding training opportunities for Craft employees while in part also serving as refresher for them as the region begins to gear up for the upcoming outage season – was well received and labeled “inspiring”, according to Raj Perumal, Resource Director for Craft in MEA.

Future Supervisors

The entire week of 25 July was dedicated to Future Supervisor Training in Dubai.  During this, 13 Lead Turbine Mechanics (selected out of 250 candidates based on performance and past experience) were being prepared for On-job Training (OJT) which will last for two outage seasons.  During their OJT they will receive extensive coaching and upon completion of the rotation, and subject to successful evaluation and positions available, they will be promoted to Craft Supervisor.

Raj says that while Future Supervisor Training originated at the Houston Learning Center, modules were tailored for MEA region-specific needs and presented for the first time on local soil.

He explains that as part of the MEA Craft Outreach Program, 30% of Craft will be targeted for similar training programs in different countries across the region in Q3.

Special thank you

Raj expresses congratulations and sincere thanks to Ahmad Yassin, Ahmed Shahin, Anwar Abdin, Bilal Belkhiri, Mohamed Gamal, Mohamed Hedar, Prabodh Padawe, Rania Genena, Ravi Yadav, Shaimaa Galal, Taleb Mohammed Labgaa and Waleed Ibrahim for their meaningful contributions across all the training sessions to adapt and develop training material, and acting as course presenters.

Outreach to enhance EHS & quality

A two-day session for 28 Craft employees at all levels – held on 19 and 20 July as part of MEA’s Craft Outreach Program – was tailored to enhance EHS and quality awareness to avoid EHS near misses and quality defects in the next outage season, as well as furthering knowledge of critical e-tools.

I&C training camp

The training camp for seven Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Craft Technicians, took place on 17 and 18 July in Cairo.  It was the first I&C camp of its kind for MEA and is one of four planned for the region this year.  The camps aim to enhance the knowledge of I&C technicians on a number of topics which in general seeks to eliminate vibration quality defects (based on historical analysis) and building knowledge on Legacy Alstom Steam commissioning tools.

Training spinoffs

Raj says: “Our training has multiple spinoffs.  Besides the obvious of increasing knowledge and investing in the future growth of our employees, the sessions position us to build our pipeline of future leaders as we broaden the talent pool from which we can select”.

In addition it offers opportunity to collaborate with coworkers, develops stronger relationships with other team members, motivates and boosts morale.

Taher says that presenting training specific to a job role equips employees with knowledge needed to accomplish their daily tasks and ensures they remain qualified for the responsibilities expected of them.  In turn, this leads to increased productivity and lean work, giving them confidence in their role.

“Training also creates better leaders.  This ultimately shapes the caliber of managers for which FieldCore is looking to help drive our business into the future while caring for all employees,” he concludes.
