Enhancing Tooling Efficiency: A Successful Kaizen Event at the Griñon Tooling Facility

Dec 4, 2024 | Continuous Improvement / LEAN

At GE Vernova, we challenge ourselves to be better every day by implementing Lean methodology to the way we work.  Recently, our One Field Services Aero Value Stream team recently conducted a Kaizen event focused on the LM6000 Hot Section Exchange (HSE) at the Griñon Tooling Facility in Madrid, Spain. The primary objective was to optimize the use of tooling kits.

In collaboration with subject matter experts from OFS Aero and representatives from both operational and tooling teams, the initiative aimed to enhance safety, quality, delivery, and cost efficiency through improved tooling management and standardization. The team implemented several key improvements using the 5s approach:

  • Reduced the number of boxes used on-site to maximize deck space.
  • Employed visual management techniques for clearer tool location.
  • Labeled and organized tools according to the sequence of operations and task requirements.

Prior to the Kaizen event, tools arrived on-site in 10 different boxes and were not organized with respect to operational sequence or space constraints. With the adoption of the 5S visual management approach, tools are now categorized by scope and color-coded. This innovation allows for reduced packaging for partial scopes, cutting costs and minimizing environmental impact by as much as 30%. Additionally, tools are arranged based on operational sequence, with heavier items positioned closer to the pickup location for safety.

This is just one example of many of how our teams work hard to continue to drive operational excellence for our customers.

Thanks to the team for their great work on this project!
